by Blue Rose

Blue Rose Bookstore will be giving away one book every other month!

Our first freebie for July 2010 is Thomas Jefferson: An Intimate History by Fawn M. Brodie

Thomas Jeffersonback cover text: Thomas Jefferson: An Intimate HistoryWith a novelist’s skill and a scholar’s meticulous detail, Fawn M. Brodie portrays Thomas Jefferson as he wrestled with issues of revolution, religion, power, race, and love–ambivalences that exerted a subtle but powerful influence on his political writing and his decision making. Brodie’s biography was the first to set forth a convincing case that Thomas Jefferson was the father of children born to his slave Sally Hemings–a case that has now been confirmed by DNA tests of their descendants.

“A powerful and touching portrait….Brodie has humanized Jefferson without in the least diminishing him.” — Wallace Stegner

“Brilliant, provocative….A biography no one interested in the man or his times should miss.” — Larry McMurty, Washington Post Book World

American history has always fascinated me… Why? Because I am a Canadian and our histories and that of the North American continent are invariably tied; the ebbs and tides of both, intertwined in destiny moving forward into greatness. The spirit that is seen throughout American history is that of preservation, loyalty, independence, growth and uppermost, keeping and respecting the dignity of man. American history is a showcase of leadership, philosophy put into action and towards a purpose… that of freedom, understanding, respect. Please accept this as my entry as I would love to read this book on Thomas Jefferson; he has always fasinated me as man caught in his time, but one who had very modern thoughts and ideals. Thank you!

Although American history contains some major wars and hardships, it shows other nations that with tolerance people from different cultures can live together. American History symbolizes freedom and equality.
